The Veterans Administration “Secret Wait List” Scandal is blowing up across the country with whistle blowers coming forward in at least 20 states. More sinister than incompetence or inefficiency, the percolating VA scandal is simply one cog in a very big government machine in which our vets get chewed up and spit out, often with tragic results. Veterans, those who most deserve the help and support of the nation they serve, have been abused by the Veterans Administration in more ways than simple neglect.
The government is using terminology in background checks for firearms that could disqualify countless veterans, because of a diagnosis of PTSD or some similar problem, from legally owning a gun.
The move by the Veteran’s Administration, under the direction of Obama’s army of leftist appointees, to disarm our veterans is not a new tactic. The American Left with Hussein at the helm have planned their assault on our 2nd Amendment rights for years.
Harold “Dinkiedow” (Vietnamese for ‘the crazy one’) Herrington, a Vietnam vet and friend of mine–who has an impressive Internet presence of his own–recounted for me this conversation from two years back.
After struggling for years with the Veterans Administration regarding the disability benefits owed me because of injuries I sustained in Vietnam, I received an unsolicited phone call two years ago from the Nashville Veterans Administration.
A woman called me stating she was a representative of the Veterans Administration. The call started like this:
“Mr. Herrington, if you are in possession of a fire arm or ammunition you are in violation of the Brady Bill and face multiple years in prison.”
I replied, “What? I haven’t touched a firearm since leaving Vietnam hanging the side of an C-130 on a stretcher in which I was full from head to toe with multiple shrapnel wounds. So,what the hell has the got to do with me?”
She said, “Do I need to repeat myself? If you try to purchase a fire arm or ammo we will put you in prison for the rest of your life.”
I yelled, “What the eff is this about? Give me your supervisor now!”
She replied, “He’s at lunch I’ll have him call you.”
An hour later the woman called back, and she stated, “My supervisor told me just to repeat what I said earlier, and to add that you have been declared incompetent.” She then hung up.
Stunned, I called the V.A. and was told No One from the V.A. called me.
Two days later I received a letter in the mail stated also stated I had been ‘Declared Incompetent’ by the V.A. but that I had but 30 days to prove my competency before a Judge in Nashville, which is 300 miles away from my home.
I’ve been blogging for some time, so I started writing about what the V.A. had just done to me and posting it online through my blog and social media
. I also contacted my representatives State and Washington D.C. To my surprise, I got a call from the NRA stating their legal team had taken notice of my case and were going to assign an attorney to represent me. With their help the Veterans Administration review my case and 60 days later I was declared legally competent!
Don’t let the name “Dinkiedow,”
fool you. To do what I did in Vietnam and come out alive you had to be a little crazy. But I am a fully competent and law-abiding American veteran. Veterans, beware, you are being hunted by our government.
Dinkiedow is one of thousands of veterans whose ‘competency’ has been challenged because they came home wounded or traumatized. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may impact some veterans permanently, but with proper treatment and care most can live normal lives as law-abiding citizens. The government is using terminology in background checks for firearms ownership that could disqualify countless veterans, because of a diagnosis of PTSD, or some similar problem, from legally owning a gun. By some reports, 30% of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have been diagnosed with PTSD.
There is no question that since 9/11 our fighters have been over-taxed with multiple deployments and inadequate resources. The lack of a clear objective, rules of engagement that give the edge to the enemy, and weak leadership in the Oval Office, State Department, and Department of Defense, have added to the emotional bewilderment and confusion faced by our deployed troops. But remember, our WWII veterans suffered grave trauma and probably sustained similar rates of PTSD, but they were neither diagnosed nor declared ‘incompetent.’ Those men were trustworthy and law-abiding. They didn’t commit crimes upon their return. The Greatest Generation returned home and rebuilt the national economy.
Many of our war veterans today are having interactions with the V.A. not unlike Dinkiedow’s, most in the form of letters
“A determination of incompetency will prohibit you from purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition. If you knowingly violate any of these prohibitions, you may be fined, imprisoned, or both pursuant to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, Pub.L.No. 103-159, as implemented at 18, United States Code 924(a)(2).”
“Incompetency” is an ill-defined term and WILL be misapplied to achieve the goal of disarmament of our veterans. Prior to the Sandy Hook massacre, both President Obama
and Colorado’s governor, John Hickenlooper
, intimated that they were going to crack down on gun ownership in America. Declarations of ‘incompetency’ by government agencies run by bureaucrats will be used as a means to prosecute many veterans who, in reality, should qualify to own firearms.
Why veterans? Regardless of political party, most veterans maintain a high level of personal discipline and skill with firearms. As a group they tend to be patriotic because, more than any other group of Americans, they have devoted their youth and blood to the cause of country. Freedom has been etched into their muscles and bones and they take nothing for granted. The American Left, lead by Obama, fears veterans because they never abandon the oaths they took to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States. Although servicemen and women also swear oaths to obey orders from commanders, those are secondary to their allegiance to the Constitution and the principles of liberty. We live under a pseudo-tyrannical regime in 2013. The 2nd Amendment is our guarantee against tyrants, and the best guarantors of the efficacy of the 2nd Amendment are our military veterans.
Over the past year what can only be described as a purge by the White House of many chief military figures in high office has taken place. A lot of disturbing reports, including a statement by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jim Garrow
stating that the Obama Administration is jettisoning commanders who refuse to fire on civilian
populations, swirl around these controversial dismissals. Others speculate that the Administration is purging those who disagree with Obama’s
relatively soft stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The Free Republic reported
just after the 2012 elections that Obama is firing his top commanders in unprecedented numbers because he ‘fears a coup.’
If it’s true that President Obama fears a military coup, then it’s also true that the distrust is mutual. Washington D.C. is a toxic environment for both military commanders and military policy these days. President Obama and those he chooses to lead the Military–especially Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense and John Kerry as Secretary of State–harbor a venomous contempt for the American Military as it was under Reagan. Their goal is to equalize the world by making our military equal to socialist democracies and second-world nations. The supreme duty of Obama’s military will be to keep a revolution-minded civilian population in check. To achieve these goals the high commanders of the Armed Forces must believe in peace through appeasement, and enact social program policies that frustrate the role of the military and demoralize the spirit of patriotism that once fueled recruitment and excellence. And, as Dinkiedow says, ‘veterans beware!’ Veterans are the biggest civilian threat to a tyrannical federal government. To keep us all in check, they will designate as many of our veterans as they can ‘incompetent.’
