“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?… Has it ever occurred to your, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?… The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking-not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.”
— George Orwell, 1984, Book 1, Chapter 5

We are all amused by the newspeak coming from the Left.  The Right has its own lexicon as well and is not exactly exaggeration-free.  But the big difference between the two is that the language of Leftspeak is usually rooted in fear and a “worst case” reality which is, in fact, non-reality.  They also attempt to use word association and lies to destroy their opponents since Liberals are generally cowards and cannot stand up to real debate.  An accurate gauge of veracity is to identify the exact opposite of what is portrayed by Liberals. There is where you will find the truth.

The Right is, appropriately, the Archie Bunker of political discourse.  Older, a little stodgy, and occasionally armed with epithets. But bigoted statements, if they are hurled at all, are cushioned by an air of joking and hackneyed humor.  Did Archie really believe that Meathead was a “commie pinko?” No, Archie Bunker simply used the happy hyperbole of Hayek  habitues to illustrate a point. Meathead was a proto-commie pinko with Leftist leanings, not a full-fledged Soviet party apparatchik butcher.  Plus, Archie Bunker had good evidence that Meathead was a commie-pinko sympathizer.  Meathead clearly espoused the Marxist principles of redistribution and communistic government.  If the Right pins a label on someone, “Jane Fonda is a traitor,” for example, it is because we have evidence- usually the documented words and actions of said Liberal-that supports the label.

The Left however, flavors their rhetoric with one of two spices: The first is MENACE. They coin terminology designed to paint an opponent as something inhuman and monstrous, with lethal intent. “Conservatives want to take food away from children, and medical care away from poor kids. They want to pollute the air and kill all the spotted owls.”  Liberals cannot win an argument for their side using reason, so they attack the character of their opponent, not the ideas that are being debated.

The other approach of the mendacious Left is to employ inert, vaguely descriptive words to denote something that ordinarily would provoke a strong emotional response, thereby neutralizing the power of language to truthfully portray whatever the hell they are doing. “Choice vs. abortion.”  This is the euphemistic newspeak of vague, surreal terms that prevents you from reacting emotionally since it takes hours to decode its meaning, and by that time you just don’t care anymore.

The Obama Administration has been particularly fruitful in their production of newspeak, doublespeak, and outright deceptive language. I do, in all fairness, give credit to the BAMBAM propaganda machine for the sheer entertainment value of its rhetorical gobbledygook.

The employment of rhetoric by the Right and Left reminds me of pranks pulled by rival siblings: Big brother Rightly will tell little sister Leftly that the brown things in the cat litter box are Tootsie Rolls. BUT, big brother Leftly will tell little sister Rightly that Dad’s razor is a tongue cleaner.  One is unpleasant and a little messy, the other is bloody, painful, and permanently disfiguring.  To the Left, Truth=Hatespeak.

  1. Well that was eye-opening thanks for the well articulated blog with which I totally agree, having come under the same attacks from a few libs when I presented a truth concerning conservatives they got nasty about it and called me stupid and mean-spirited… I did not say anything derogatory towards them only explaining what I knew of what conservatives are all about…

That is a classic tactic of the Left. They can’t argue substance so they must attack the character of their opponent. A good way to handle that is to ask a question. ie, “Well, please tell me what it is that you find mean spirited?” “Does the truth always make you so uncomfortable?” “Would you like to tell me when you became so defensive?” Questions misdirect and keep them on the defensive. They’ve been doing it for years. Our turn to call them on it and play by their rules!
