Gagging Doctors and Counselors: The Ban on “Gay to Straight” Therapy
This emerging movement, through which courts are banning a specific form of counselor or physician-administered therapy, has destructive tentacles reaching into the lives of doctors, counselors, and their patients. There are the religious, social, and cultural implications that drive this movement, but its effect is to infringe on the free speech rights of those providers who want to present a variety of options to their patients seeking to address mental and emotional pain. There are two sides of this ugly coin; the ban on “gay to straight” therapy is meant to further the militant homosexual agenda in the United States by removing alternatives to those who may want a way out of the lifestyle. The other side is an attack on the expression of those alternatives, whether from the pulpit, or the privacy of a counselor or physician’s office. This is an attack on free speech. If you’re a stalwart heterosexual committed to Judeo-Christian norms of sex and marriage, you’re the new abnormal. A tsunami of righteous indignation from Americans appalled at the power of the homosexual lobby to destroy the life and living of a Christian man who opines about his distaste for sodomy, has stunned organizations such as GLAAD who have been living in a delusional world for years where the mere wish for something to be makes it so. The something I speak of is homosexual sex, which cannot be and never will be, marriage. Phil Robertson, when he spoke of his dismay that a man would actually prefer another man’s anus to a woman’s vagina, was simply thinking out loud a question that has been knocking around the brains of heterosexuals for millennia. This is just the latest battle in the homosexual war on marriage, family, and children. On August 29, 2013, California’s court of infamy, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, actually upheld a ban on a category of mental health therapy that helps individuals vexed with same-sex attraction overcome the impulses that cause them distress and unhappiness. The article in TIME Swampland states:
The judges said trying to change a minor’s sexual orientation through intense therapy appeared dangerous, and that California lawmakers properly showed that the sexual orientation change efforts were outside the scientific mainstream and have been rejected for good reason. “One could argue that children under the age of 18 are especially vulnerable with respect to sexual identity and that their parents’ judgment may be clouded by this emotionally charged issue as well,” Judge Susan Graber wrote for the court panel.
Youngsters under the age of 18 are indeed vulnerable, and in a small minority there exists some ambiguity about sexual identity. That is exactly why therapies that guide children through the confusion of such ambiguous phases SHOULD NOT be banned, and are actually critical to the social-emotional well-being of many. “Gay to straight” therapies take many forms and are usually initiated by the child who is feeling the pain of sexual identity confusion. A blanket ban on such forms of therapy prevents anyone, clinical psychiatrists to pastors, from helping a child even consider that they may not really be homosexual, but may rather be going through a developmental phase or an emotionally confusing situation. Some children who are sexually ambiguous have been victims of grooming by same-sex predators, and may innocently question their own sexual identity, having been stimulated or “courted” by a homosexual or lesbian abuser. Some have been victims of ongoing sexual abuse by persons of the same or opposite sex. Some children who feel same-sex attraction are navigating a stage of sexual development where they feel particular attraction or affection for friends or idolized adult figures of the same sex. Some children are inexplicably and organically sexually aroused by members of the same sex. Most children under the age of 18–and up to the age of 25, when the prefrontal cortex of the brain, where identity, self-regulation, and judgment are determined, becomes fully developed and functional–overcome such phases of sexual ambiguity. All but a small minority are heterosexual. Even those who determine themselves to be authentically homosexual or lesbian, tend to suffer from higher rates of depression and mental illness than the population generally. A ban on healing therapies for sexually confused teens has also been enacted in New Jersey, and is on the docket in Massachusetts as well. Activists and judges alike present a constellation of excuses for outlawing this form of mental health counseling, primarily that addressing the unhappiness caused by sexual confusion through clinical therapy designed to help individuals understand and gain control of their emotions, and focus on what is “normal,” somehow discriminates against homosexual youth. It’s ironic is that many of these young people will never understand their true nature or identity, homosexual or heterosexual, without such therapeutic interventions. The larger travesty is that the courts are essentially outlawing a useful tool that many people need to repent of a form of sin that may doom them to a lifetime of frustration and isolation. Make no mistake; sexual immorality is a sin, and homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, and all other possible sexual aberrations, are condemned by God. The mere existence of religion as a cornerstone of Western culture, or the condemnation from pulpits of homosexual conduct, do not themselves bring about unpleasant consequences to the sexually aberrant. Frustration, confusion, depression, unhappiness, isolation, and mental illness ARE the consequences of breaking one of God’s most critical commandments. Sexually transmitted diseases and mental illness are the two most apparent burdens borne by the homosexual and LGBT population, but dissatisfaction, depression, and early death also haunt those whose lives are spent in the gravest of sexual sins. Children are the most likely individuals to be beset with confusion about their sexual identity. The years prior to adulthood are also the best time to help a confused child navigate that confusion, and with proper models and guidance, connect with the true identity that will ensure they have the best shot at lasting happiness and satisfaction. Progressivism, the LGBT lobby, Feminism, and Liberalism in schools and popular culture support the myth that unhappiness among homosexuals is the result of discrimination and social stigma. That may be partly true, but it there is a growing body of evidence that a way of life contrary to the Laws of God, without repentance, and sadly with fewer and fewer opportunities for escape, is the cause of such unhappiness. Absolute truths have absolute and inescapable consequences, and legalistic contortions in the government and in its highest courts, cannot nullify the fact that homosexuality is a sin and, in the eternal perspective, is incompatible with human happiness. by Marjorie Haun 3/24/14
