When you consider the actions and attitudes of the Democrat majority in Colorado’s legislative bodies, it is clear that they would rather keep guns out of the hands of good people, and allow criminals access to easy prey, than take the chance that a criminal’s civil rights might be violated. Colorado’s Democrat legislators would rather protect the rights of sexual predators than enact tough laws to protect the innocence, safety, and very lives of children.

Colorado’s first openly gay speaker of the State House, Mark Ferrandino, showed what can only be described as contempt last week  for the children and families of our state. Representative Libby Szabo (R Arvada) is the sponsor of a “Jessica’s Law” bill in Colorado that would require  mandatory sentences of up to 25 years for the sexual abuse of a child 12 years of age or younger. Colorado’s current law calls for sentences as little as 2 years for child rape. “Jessica’s Law” is the monogram for laws designed to increase sentences, and tighten the rules for monitoring and reporting  for convicted sex offenders who prey upon children, thus decreasing the likelihood they will commit multiple crimes.

The law, named after Jessica Lunsford, a little girl from Florida who was raped and murdered in 2005 by a previously incarcerated sex offender, was never enacted federally, but currently exists in 45 states with minor variations. Liberal Democrat Ferrandino impudently sent Representative Szabo’s bill to the State Veteran’s and Military Committee where it would be deliberately killed without consideration. It seems that Democrats in Colorado’s state legislature  favor  the rights of criminals over the lives of child rape victims given that Ferrandino and others fretted that this “one-size-fits-all” approach might not be fair to some sex offenders. Governor Hickenlooper, former brewmeister and Obama flunkey, has been quiet on the enactment of “Jessica’s Law” in Colorado.

The artful dodge from Democrats in Denver went something like, “Colorado already has tough anti-rape laws. We simply don’t need Jessica’s Law.” Parents of children who have been victims of molesters and rapists would readily disagree. And with a recidivism rate of around 50% for formerly convicted sexual predators, Democrats appear to care little about public safety and the young victims that may be harmed by repeat offenders in Colorado.

Mark Lunsford, the father of the little Jessica Lunsford, has crusaded in all states seeking to stiffen penalties for child rapists and murderers. All states except for insanely liberal states like Vermont, Hawaii, and New York, have enacted “Jessica’s Law.” In spite of Mark Lunsford’s tearful entreaty on Capitol Hill to protect children from violent sexual predators with stricter laws and harsher penalties, Colorado’s Democrats have turned their backs on fathers, mothers, children and all victims and potential victims of sexual predators in this state. Mark Ferrandino and his Liberal accomplices at the State Capitol are delicately considerate of the rights of rapists, but Colorado families must hold them to account for their callous disregard for innocent victims.

Democrat legislators, cleverly manipulated by Mark Ferrandino, shot down the law that favored the safety of Colorado’s children over the rights of convicted sex offenders. Earlier this week Representative Joe Salazar (D Thornton) created a tsunami of indignation when, during his testimony for HB 1226 (that would repeal the rights of Colorado college students and professors to defend themselves with a firearm while on campus), he intimated that women who feared being raped could not be trusted to use a gun properly in self-defense. With the now famous quote,

“And you don’t know, if you feel like you’re going to be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around, or if you feel like you’re in trouble, and when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop around that somebody,”

Salazar exposed another version of Democrat contempt for victims of sexual crimes.

To add insult to injury, the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs released a list of things to do in the case of a sexual attack. The list omits using a gun for personal defense, but it does include “passive resistance,” “urinating or vomiting on the attacker,” or “yelling.”  Heaven forbid a young woman, (or man) should have the means to fight a deadly attack with equally deadly force.

Americans have always know that Democrats favor the rights of criminals over the rights of law-abiding citizens. That’s the gist of gun-control. In the wee minds of those on the Left, ordinary people cannot be trusted to use deadly force in defense of their lives, but criminals must be given every benefit of the doubt when it comes to their motivations and tactics.

Parents like Mark Lunsford, children, and vulnerable college co-eds are victims of the assault by Colorado Democrats on public safety and personal liberty. The results of their policies will be more violent crime and more repeat offenses by violent sexual predators. It is not an exaggeration to say that Colorado Democrats are pro-rape. Their words and actions say it all.
